MEET THE TEACHER 



Mrs. Melissa Scheible 

I am so excited to be your child's teacher this year and I am elated to get to know your family and work together to meet some impressive goals this school year. We are going to have so much fun exploring, engaging, questioning, practicing, retrying, problem solving and creating this year. You are going to be amazed at how much your child learns in Kindergarten. 

Just a little bit about me... I am a small town Canadian girl who has lived in Michigan now for about 16 years. I graduated with my Bachelor's Degree from Ferris State University (GO BULLDOGS) in 2006 and I now have my Master's Degree from Central Michigan University in Educational Technology! I am married and have two awesome sons Rowan 6 and Grady 4. We are a sports loving family so our extra curricular activities usually include some sort of sporting event. We also enjoy camping together, travelling and exploring new places.

Top It!

The math program we use here at Riverview is called Everyday Mathematics. One of the games that we introduce through this program is a MUST for Kindergarten kiddos called Top It! This is a game that can be adapted in so many ways, you can keep it just the simple "greater number" version, or you can make it an addition or subtraction version, etc. Throughout the year we make it more challenging for the students but it is definitely something they love and we play often. The best part about this game is that it can be played at home with a regular deck of cards.

Library Time

We get to visit our school library once a week, every Monday afternoon. The students sit and listen to a story with our librarian and he teaches them some sign language each time. This time they got to pick out their books and bring them back to our classroom for the week. They were so excited, as you can see, and ready to read!

Willaby Wallaby

Ms. O'Hara sings this song with my Ks at the end of every music class and they love it!! I always end up getting it stuck in my head for the rest of the day.

Professor Pineapple

I introduced Professor Pineapple today at school. When doing an activity I am always looking for someone to "teach" their friends how to complete the task. They absolutely LOVE it! It's such a great motivator and a reward for students who are working so hard to do their best.

Rainbow Names

Mrs. Miller is drowning in rainbow names! This is one of my favorite projects and I LOVE how it lights up our hallway when we get them all hung up above our lockers. We do this project every year during the first week of school. It's always fun to see how the kids learn how to manipulate glue and how they organize their colors.

First Day of Kindergarten

We survived the first day of K! It was quite a whirlwind and nothing like a real day of Kindergarten, but we made it. I have such an awesome group of students this year, it sure does make me excited. I only had one student with a sad heart but he totally came around and said "I love Kindergarten!" at the end of the day. 😊

I am married and have two awesome sons Rowan 5 and Grady 3. We are a sports loving family so our extra curricular activities usually include some sort of sporting event. We also enjoy camping together and exploring new places.

April Clean Up Has Begun

It's that time of year when we start learning in Kindergarten how to do our part to take care of the Earth. Some of the first graders joined a few of us today in an effort to clean up trash around our playground. This is trash that has been burried deep beneath piles of snow and blown into corners during the winter. Time to make Riverview's playground sparkle again!

Science Experiment

We had so much fun today learning about the impact that incline has on speed. We learned that if we increased the incline the speed of our Hot Wheels car would go faster. We even had Officer Lorne in here with his laser speed detector to help us track our data.

Global School Play Day

We celebrated Global School Play Day on Feb. 2 in our class. Global School Play Day is a movement to bring back creative and exploratory play in the classroom. I asked students to bring in a game or a toy to share with the class. We had plenty of board games and that was the big hit! We had some students playing house, others playing dress up, others building but mostly students were learning new games. It was great to be able to come together and discuss problems that were occurring and how to solve those problems. Students practiced following rules, taking turns, being fair, etc. It was so wonderful to see other kids teaching friends how to play games. This is my favorite day of the whole year and I think that the students would agree.

Election Day

We have done quite a few voting activities in Kindergarten throughout the last week but this activity was by far a classroom favorite! We each got to eat an Oreo cookie and a chocolate chip cookie. We had a ballot to mark which kind of cookie was our favorite. Of course, we kept our opinions to ourselves and respected the thoughts and feelings of other voters. :) The best part was tallying the votes. I just love the thought and consideration that each student put into this tasting of the cookies. So much fun and chocolate chip won!

Classroom Volunteers

We LOVE our classroom volunteers. I was able to sneak a few pictures of our volunteers in action on Friday during center time. We also have volunteers that come in throughout the week during our writing time. I am beyond appreciative of these parents that take time out of their busy schedules to aid us in our learning. Your kiddos LOVE it too! It's so great to have the home and school connection being made through classroom volunteering. THANK YOU!

Apple Orchard

We are so lucky to have a school population that is able to raise enough money through the Walk-a-Thon fundraiser so that our PTO is able to send us on these amazing field trips. We were able to bus 71 kids and many adults all the way to Stanton, MI and enjoy the wonderful Anderson & Girls Orchard. When we first arrived at the orchard we were treated with fresh donuts and cider. It was all very delicious! While we were there at the orchard we got to partake in a wagon ride out into the orchard where we found and picked our most favorite apples. We also got to tour the cider mill and learn how they sort, clean and what they do with all of the apples, including how they actually make apple cider. At the orchard they have many interesting animals including zebras, camels, emu, kangaroos, and many more! We even got to feed the goats in their petting zoo. We ended our day at Anderson & Girls playing in their amazingly awesome play equipment. The bus ride home was certainly a quiet one, we were all tired out!

Fire Safety

We had a visit from our local fire fighters this who just happen to be two of our dads in our classroom! Firefighter Russ and Firefighter Sean came to our school to talk to us about fire safety and we even got to tour the fire truck!

Officer Lorne

We are so fortunate here at Riverview to have a wonderful collaboration with our City Police Department. Officer Lorne is a constant presence here in our building and a very friendly face for our students. Yesterday he came into our classroom to talk to us about how we can be a good friend and how we can stop bullies in their tracks. The students had a lot to offer the conversation.

Meet Your Teacher!

Hi! My name is Mrs. Scheible and I am going to be your Kindergarten teacher! This will be my 6th year teaching Kindergarten at Riverview but my 10th year teaching total. I love Kindergarten and all the exploring, learning and fun we get to have!

 

I am currently working on my Master's degree in Educational Technology and I am loving everything that I am learning. I can't wait to introduce all of the things I have learned to you and your families.

 

I grew up in a small town in Ontario, Canada and I absolutely love to go home and visit. My three sisters, two nieces, two nephews, and parents still live there.

 

This summer I got to spend a lot of time with my 4 1/2 year old son Rowan, who will also be a Cardinal this year in Mrs .Zocco's Young Kindergarten class, my 2 1/2 year old son Grady and my husband Nick. We played a lot outside, went camping and swimming, kayaking and  we went on a few fun trips.  

I am excited to spend the next year learning with you!

Book: Love You Forever and all the other Robert Muncsh books

Hobbies: Golfing, blogging, concerts, snowshoeing, boating and kayaking and being outside 

I'm so lucky!!!!

This beauties made my morning...made my day...made my week...made my year! Look at my beautiful new rocking chair!!! I have to move to a new classroom next year, still teaching Kindergarten but within four new walls and this chair will be the most perfect addition. THANK YOU TO MY AMAZING KINDERGARTEN FAMILIES!! I LOVE this chair!!!!

Little Engineers

We have spent a lot of time in Kindergarten learning about shapes and especially 3 dimensional shapes. At centers we got to explore the engineer in us and build 3D shapes using play-doh and sticks. So much fun!

Spring Has SpRuNg In Kindergarten!

We have been so excited these last two weeks to FINALLY have some Spring weather. Along with running like wild animals on the playground and just having an extra hop in our steps we have also been witnessing life in our classroom. We were given some tadpole eggs last week and were able to witness the hatching of tadpoles. We now have some that have developed gills and we are hoping to be able to see legs develop and maybe even these little tadpoles will transform into frogs before the school year is over (which is sooner than we think).

Since we have been learning about what plants need in order to grow, we also thought we'd dabble a little in the field of gardening, well kind of. Last week at center time we planted some grass and gave it all it needed. Believe it or not, let than a week later, we are already seeing sprouts. We added our funny face pictures so that once the grass is tall enough it will look like we have spiky green hair.
